Our experience

How to train your dog with love + science book review - the original training of the dog

This book surprised me in many ways. I laughed more loudly than I thought I read a dog training book, for one. I also found myself strangely emotional at times.

But the biggest surprise was showing how Grossman has added a whole new level to the world of positive training. Let me explain

My dog training began at the age of eight when I entered my chocolate lab, Nile 4-H. There, I learned how to train with behavior, throat chains and hard stares.

At college, I received a bachelor’s degree in biology, emphasizing animal behavior. It was in these classes that I understand the disadvantages of heavy training methods (and why Nile really didn’t like me so much). I used this knowledge when I obtained my dog training certificate through a positive reinforcement training program.

The philosophy of training that I used to teach my obedience classes and during consultation with my home behavior was a positive reinforcement approach that is a heavy completion with science. I thought my method was best with positive training.

And then I read this book.

Grassman takes a highly progressive, effective approach to dog training and says, without remorse, we can work better! Its philosophy: We can encourage our dogs to engage in our behavior without using any kind of power or repression, and we do this by approaching training as a game where both sides work. It looks like they are winning.

She defends this stance throughout the book, with a remarkable punishment trainer/TV personality, explaining science, real -life examples, and horrible stories.

Animal behavior includes many recent discoveries about how animal brains work in this deep dive. One of the many stories that lives with me from this book is the fact that “learned helplessness”, a condition that can occur when an animal is often punished or for reasons for reasons. Offer just as depression does in the human brain.

Grassman expands it by saying that you can help your dog avoid the agency to choose your choice. And that you can use a reward -based training to make sure they make Right Choice

But this book is not just about dog training. Since the grassman is in a hurry to identify, human beings are also animals. And this means that the pillars of behavior can be applied to spouses, owners and strangers as easily as they can go to dogs.

In the same vein as the classic book of Karen Periyar, Don’t shoot the dogThis training has more requests than a dog’s obedience.

As a certified dog trainer, a large animal behavior, and as a dog owner for more than 36 years, I was surprised how far I did from this book.

Grossman’s charming written style, humor and integrity, with a lot of valuable information, is not only a valuable reading but also entertaining.

Key aspect

How to train your dog with love + science book review - book with content

Science -based point of view

Grassman does not waste time diving in a hot discussion about the best way to train dog. Answer: “Good training” is the best training.

Positive vs. punish, treat with a shock. Grassman defends a dog’s good training as anything that produces reliable results and pleasant dogs without side effects. And she uses behavior science as her leader to find these methods.

She describes the whole book in detail how to stay in the quadrant of a “positive reinforcement” is often the safest and effective way to train dogs (or humans or dolphins). She also helps you establish a solid foundation for effective training in this circle by teaching you the basics of classical and operating conditioning.

Remose Applications

If you are after a book that offers a step -by -step approach to training orders of ordinary obedience, this is not a book for you. But if you are looking for a deep dive in the theory of dog behavior and training to establish a firm foundation that you can train for anything, Grassman has covered you.

In this book, the popular methods of training and why they do not work or do not work on the basis of science. Then she gives you the tools that you need to understand how to change and combine your dog’s behavior in any situation. From there, she provides real life examples and stories to help you see how these methods can be applied to common issues.

Engaged and entertaining

I have read a lot of training books and even more animals. Some are particularly engaged and even less fun. Grassman manages to meet with both How to train your dog with love + science.

She provides so much information about strict behavior science. But she makes emotional stories, presenting comic stories, and presenting entertaining examples. As a result, there is a book that is as fun as it is to read.

More importantly, this book offers the vision of behavior whether everyone – the dog owner or not – can use it. The fact is that the book is fun to read, only making people so easy to recommend.
