Cincinnati Zoo Celebrates Fiona the Hippo’s 8th Birthday and a Huge Social Media Milestone

“We shared updates on social media every day during the first year of Fiona’s life, and people couldn’t get enough,” said Amy LaBarbara, marketing manager for the Cincinnati Zoo. “We even tried to stop at one point but got so much pushback that we continue with the daily posts. We don’t post daily anymore, but the posts about Fiona and her younger brother Fritz reach a global audience. Constantly getting millions of views and likes.

The zoo reaches nearly nine million people across all of its social platforms. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, x, Youtubeand LinkedIn. Her Instagram account has been voted #1 in Cincinnati for several years in a row, thanks to adorable and heartwarming content featuring Fiona and other zoo residents.

“In addition to sharing beautiful and entertaining animal content, we use our platforms to encourage our followers to care about wildlife and wild places,” said LaBarbara. “We share stories about the work our conservation partners are doing to protect the animals that live here, including hippos, elephants, tigers, birds and other wild counterparts.”
