Since its founding in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has been a leader in the farm animal rescue movement, placing thousands of animals with safe and loving homes through our Farm Animal Adoption Network (FAAN). Abused, wasted and neglected fields have been linked.
The rescue and placement team receives daily requests for help from all over the country. In 2021 and 2022, we received 3,085 applications, representing more than 19,000 animals in need. These individuals often escape from animal agriculture. Some have been captured by the authorities or abandoned or surrendered by their guardians. Some have fallen off transport trucks or survived cruelty and neglect. All need safe homes dedicated to providing lifelong, individualized care.
In the United States alone, 10 billion land animals are raised and slaughtered within the food system in the United States alone. Sanctuary space is limited, and our ability to provide direct assistance may be limited by location, staffing, and physical capacity. Therefore, we work closely with the sanctuary community and adopters in our network to save as many lives as possible.
Finding safe homes is difficult because society views farm animals as commodities rather than companions. Individuals with significant care needs and those that are more frequently needy, such as roosters, male ducks, and guinea pigs, are even more difficult to keep. By including every potential home in the screening process, we get to know each adopter and try to understand who would be a good fit for their situation. Together with shelters and private homes, we maintain a compassionate community of adopters committed to saving farm animals from exploitation and ensuring that each rescued individual leads an enriched life.
