Authorities in Finland are investigating a case of animal cruelty after more than 100 sick dogs were discovered in a van.
Police stopped the van at a gas station in Norms on New Year’s Eve. They found a mix of purebred and mixed-breed dogs, including puppies, in appalling conditions in the car.
A veterinarian determined that 50-60 dogs were so severely malnourished and sick that they had to be euthanized. The surviving animals are now in the care of animal welfare organizations.
Detective Chief Inspector Tommy Lautnen said three women, all German nationals, had been arrested on suspicion of aggravated animal cruelty. Yale News.
Two of the accused are a mother and daughter, aged less than 60 and 30 years respectively. Officials revealed that some of the suspects lived in Finland while others were visiting.
Police are investigating the origin of the dogs, their intended destination and the reasons behind their poor condition. They are also looking for possible international connections to the case.
