Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather and going to the circus and zoo. Many of us bought their beloved “pets” from pet shops and kept beautiful birds in cages. We wore wool and silk, ate McDonald’s burgers, and grabbed the fish. We have never considered the effects of these actions on the animals involved. Only prejudice allows us to deny the rights of others we expect for ourselves. Whether it is based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or species, prejudice is morally unacceptable. Why do you eat pigs if you don’t eat a dog? There is the same ability to feel the pain in the dog and the pig, but it is a variety -based prejudice that allows us to think of an animal as a partner and the other as dinner.
